Geriatric Medicine and Medical Cannabis
A Talk by Associate Professor Genevieve Steiner-Lim (NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow II and Clinical Research Platform Lead, NICM Health Research Institute, Western Sydney University)
About this Talk
Dementia is the greatest cause of disability in Australians aged 65 years and over, and currently, there is no cure. With a 98% failure rate at developing Alzheimer’s disease drugs since 2004, new therapeutic candidates are urgently needed. Cannabis sativa L. contains over 100 phytocannabinoids and other compounds, some of which may have the therapeutic potential to address multiple aspects of dementia pathophysiology and aid with clinical management. This presentation will outline the current preclinical and clinical evidence on medicinal cannabis for dementia and the approach our team is taking for a new clinical trial using a CBD-rich cannabis formulation to tackle early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.
